Parts Manager Derek Rush Goes On The 991 Launch!

by Sales Team on February 1, 2012

Martin Kelly and I had the opportunity to attend the new Porsche 991 launch January 25 and 26th at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach in California. We had fantastic weather while we were there – 79-80 degrees both days. The driving event took place at the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro (where they shoot Top Gear America) just a few miles away from the resort.  Porsche wanted us to experience the new 991 in various different conditions, so they set up the track day into 5 areas:

1. Street Drive – a 90 mile drive along the Ortega Highway just as Ferry Porsche had tested his cars in Innsbruck.

2. Autocross I – Porsche Sports Driving School instructors led us through spirited drive around the decommissioned Military grade runways of El Toro.

3 Autocross II-Runway 7 simulated a slalom course that pitted the last gen 997 with the new 991.

4. Technical Briefing-Porsche Academy technical facilitators provided a “ground-up” exploration of the new 991.

5. Design walkaround-911 lead designer Peter Vargas explains the intricacies of redesigning the evolution of an iconic sports car and Bose provided a technical briefing on the 12 speaker 5.1 surround sound system.

After a day of driving the 991, Martin and I looked at each other and just said “wow”. This is the best handling car either of us had driven. The street drive just scoffed at our feeble attempts to drive fast around corners. The autocross events just left us wanting more as we just tailgated the “competitors” cars that Porsche provided. The gorgeous 20 inch tires provided an excellent ride up the scenic mountain drive. The new interior coddled our bottoms as we enjoyed Germany’s best in America’s best setting.

Does it sound like we are convinced this is the best 911 ever. Yes and no. It is the best modern 911 hands down, but I would like to drive my 84 Targa on that same road. Ok who am I kidding, but it would still be fun!
